Is this what responsibility feels like?

I am 100% certain that if you scroll through your timeline right now, you’ll find at least one meme about how hard life is. Someone thinks that life sucks, they’re disappointed, sad, etc. and they’re sharing that with their social media followers.

We humans are funny creatures, we’re capable of expressing emotion and capable of taking responsibility for our actions – but we hardly ever do the latter. Surprise-Wallpapers-26

Are you really surprised that we’re having this conversation again? Don’t be, its practically human nature to pass the blame onto someone or something else. This way we don’t need to carry those feelings of guilt and anguish over our faults and failures.

Hey, I’m not judging, I do it too.  It’s so much easier for me to just to hide behind a reason why it’s so awful instead of accepting responsibility for my own actions. I love holding onto anything that is tough to deal with and label it as the reason why I am no longer in control of my life. The status updates potential are endless then.

Don’t pretend like you don’t know exactly how that feels and I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one. It’s funny though because I’m actually a responsible adult who should be accountable for her actions – but I don’t want to be.

But I also really don’t want to upset myself unnecessarily because… shame.  If you could see the eye roll I just gave myself, but moving on.

We sugar coat everything so that we don’t feel badly about ourselves. You don’t have to agree with me, I know that we do this – denial isn’t just a river in Egypt. I know about denial over self-inflicted messes, I think I might be the queen of that club.  I took progress photos the other day and was surprised by what I saw.
Please don’t ask me why I was surprised that I packed on extra weight. Would regular sneaky cheats, missed meals or cupcake binges after a long day really do that? Like a baby, I refused to look at the scale and couldn’t acknowledge the fact that I’ve messed up. I deserved those comfort meals… every day… for 3-months.

Isn’t it time that I grew up though? Took a bit of responsibility for my actions? Stopped hiding behind excuses like it’s my mommy’s skirt? Isn’t it time that you do too?
Life isn’t milk and honey and you’re allowed to have awful days that make you want to eat an entire cake. But you need to acknowledge that only you can change the bad day into a lesson.

You can’t keep hiding behind reasons why you don’t take responsibility for your actions. Just like I know that I really can’t keep hiding behind these reasons anymore… I’m in my 30’s already – this behaviour is embarrassing.

I’m on social media here and here.  I’d love to hear your thoughts on taking ownership of your actions, so leave a comment or two.

Until next time.
