Your ‘diet’ is making you fat

You’ve been sipping on your cabbage soup for an hour already, licking your arm for some salt and sniffing a cup of coffee. You feel like you’ve been eating nothing for so long that Victoria’s Secret is going to make you their next Angel. So why isn’t it working?

I cringe to my toes when women tell me about a new eating ‘plan’ that they are trying where they’re consuming an average of 500 calories. I’m not going to name names, but there are multi-million brands who promote healthy living and wellness by starving their members. Yes, you heard me… you’re starving on your fad diet. These diets are wonderful for quick fixes and instant gratification, like when you get on the scale and pass out because you’re surviving on minimal food.

Rule 1 of every fad diet in history.

That doesn’t mean it is working, you shouldn’t be starving and if you are, there is a 99.9% chance that you’re going to throw in the towel and binge on everything in your home – or die, whichever comes first.

Why is that wrong?

When you are depriving your body of the nutrients that it needs to fuel itself, that doesn’t mean a good thing for your metabolism. It is not going to make your metabolism work harder or faster, but will actually do the opposite. Your body will go into survival mode and it will start storing everything it gets as fuel, and I’m pretty sure that you can tell what happens next.

If that isn’t enough, the nutritional deficiencies that fad diets cause can also lead to health conditions like hair loss and muscle loss. Your hair requires a good deal of protein in order to grow and thrive. When you are not getting enough protein in your diet, your hair eventually loses its health. Poor hair health can lead to brittleness which can turn into breakage and shedding hair. Muscle loss is another negative effect of fad diets. Since your diet is very low in calories, your body will look for other ways to get energy. One of these ways is by digesting your muscles. This is actually detrimental to weight loss because muscles help you burn more calories even when you are at rest.

How to do it differently?

It’s really simple. EAT. I eat five times a day and that includes protein, carbs and fats. I train daily and change it up in the gym regularly. I am always hungry, so I am always fueling my body with clean mini meals. It wants food, and who am I to deprive my muscle vessel of what it wants?

I am a firm believer in diet over exercise because that is where abs start. Jenadine Havenga reminded me this past weekend that we all have abs!
