5 ways to make fitness your thing

A lot of people start out on their fitness journeys thinking that the only way to go is on a treadmill. Unless you actually like to run on a treadmill, please don’t. The quickest way to turn getting fit into a chore is to do something that you really, REALLY don’t want to do.

So, to save you from throwing in the sweat towel, here are 5-tips to make finding your fitness niche easy!

Maybe you are a cardio lovin’ guy or gal, and that’s great too! But not all of us are into cardio in the conventional sense of the word, and thankfully there are options.

Start Small

I am a weightlifter, I love lifting heavy things! But it took me a while on the treadmill before I figured this out. I didn’t have to invest in a treadmill first, but a lot of people feel like that is their only option.

Basically me on a treadmill

Okay wait! I’m not singling out treadmill’s. I do actually enjoy some cardio and I do occasionally use a treadmill. We’re not besties, but I’d invite ol’ treadmill to tea once a week.

Don’t spend thousands on something you aren’t even sure you’re going to still be into in a few months time. So, start off with a pair of cost effective trainers and some gym gear and get ready to be adventurous!

Step Away from your Comfort Zone

I understand as well as anyone that starting a fitness journey is scary! But that doesn’t mean you have to slinker into a spinning class and whither away. There are literally thousands of options at your disposal and a lot of these options offer a free trial session so that you can get a feel for it, or a drastically reduced once off class.

I’ve recently started doing this in my Fit Kidd Tries series and I highly recommend that everyone give it a try. Here is my list of to-do’s so far, which makes a great foundation for your fitness adventure!

Move

Try everything you have ever wanted to!

Set Goals

It doesn’t matter how big or small your goals are, set them. I love the #goalheart concept which I encourage my Team You ladies to participate in. It’s simple, set goals for yourself based on what you want to achieve.

The idea is that you keep yourself accountable to the goals you set for yourself by keeping them close to your heart (see what I did there), and if you give up on your goal, you break your heart. This simple concept is a great motivator for pushing through when you really don’t want to.

Have Fun

Fitness is fun. If you’re looking at getting healthy as a chore or something you’re doing as a grudge, then it isn’t for you. There are so many different things that you can do to get fit, just explore your options. It is all a mindset as well, so if you have already resigned yourself to how much it will hurt, then of course it will.

Always be Loki happy about sweat.

Go into each exercise class or gym session with the kind of excitement you feel when Christmas comes. Exercise is a lot of fun when you are having fun with it!

Be Prepared

Starting a new fitness regime is going to be challenging, especially if you don’t know what to do. Start with what you have, so download a few apps that can help you start your journey to a fitter you. Know what to pack in your gym bag before you head to your first Zumba class and always have water on hand.
