New Year’s Resolutions Suck…

Face it, how long do your resolutions last?  A week? A month?  Are you one of the rare people who actually stick to their resolutions?  Better yet, what are they? You’re going to stop smoking this year, aren’t you?  Perhaps you’re finally going to start that diet to lose the 10kgs you’ve been threatening to for years.  What about that gym membership that you keep saying you’re going to get. What are you going to do in 2016 that you couldn’t follow through on in 2015?  Nothing!

You heard me and before you get your knickers in a twist, keep listening.  New Year’s Resolutions suck and they don’t work.  End of story.

Ditch the meme worthy efforts this year, and focus more on something that is achievable – set yourself goals.   Goals are the tangible prize that you can set your sights on, whereas a resolution is something you would like to change, but don’t really need to.

Here are five ways to achieve the goals you set for yourself in 2016:

Spring Clean your Mind

2015 might have been your year – it might have sucked so hard that you’re happy to see the end of it – either way, it’s over!  Declutter your mind of the year that was to make space for the year ahead.  You can’t change the past, so harping on it won’t do anything productive for you!  Move on.

Daydream a Little

I spend a lot of time lost in my own mind, and it turns out that it isn’t a bad thing afterall.  Daydreaming is a great way to start formulating the goals you have for the year ahead, and how you are going to achieve them.  The mind is a powerful tool, so spend at least 30 minutes a day visualising your goals and how you are going to reach them.

Save the Date

With goals in mind, set a realistic date to reach it by.  You have 364 days left of this year, so there is plenty of time to achieve whatever your goal may be.  Plus, with a set date, you know that you only have so much time at your disposal.

Be a Planner

You’ve set the date, you have the goal and you daydream like a pro – you are a planner!  All that you need to do now is fine tune your magnificent dream.  Write down how you are going to achieve your goal, what do you need to do to make it a reality, and how are you going to get there.  With a checklist in place, you can start marking off your achievements as you complete them, taking you closer to your goal each time.

Reflect on your Awesome

Every now and then we forget about the plan, the goal, the objective.  We get despondent about our progress or lack thereof, which sets us back in a big way.  Instead of wallowing in self-pity, reflect on how far you have come!  Read through the checklist that you made, relish in your awesome and be proud that you are closer than you thought you were.
