On any kind of journey, be it fitness, weight loss, self discovery, you name it, we’re faced with obstacles. One of the biggest obstacles that I see on a regular basis – not only in myself, but in everyone who I come across – is the trouble of excuses.
The trouble with excuses is that they come too easily and it is all your fault. Yes, you heard me. All of the wagon falls, willpower fails, wishy washy excuses that you have for why you can’t succeed, is all your fault. No, I am not being cruel, mean or insensitive, I’m being honest.
After over three years of struggling against myself, I know this much about excuses, we use them to get sympathy. Why? Because when others validate why we’re being weak, it is okay to stay off the wagon. I am an emotional eater, we all are, I used to use stress as the perfect excuse to smoke and eat. That probably also explains why I was 30kgs overweight with less than 50% working lung capacity.
“But I am going through so much right now, I can’t really cope.”
“I tried to stop smoking, but it is so hard. I can’t do it.”
“Urgh, I fell off of the wagon again. I just had the worst day and deserved that sugar laden, processed piece of fast food that I keep telling myself I’ll work off tomorrow.”
Sound familiar? Of course it does, we all rely on excuses just like that to make us feel better about our weak will.
So, what do you do to change it?
You are held prisoner by your own mind. You need to let go of the old mindset, the old way of thinking and the unhealthy thought patterns you’re holding onto (you know you are).
Let go of them, you don’t need that anymore.
Don’t Pass the Blame
This is really your fault. It is. The world isn’t out to get you, no one is. Everything that you feel bad about, is your own doing. Take ownership of your faults and turn them into positives, afterall, who knows your weaknesses better than you?
Be your own Cheerleader
The internet has given us a lot of opportunities to gather a posse of support, and that is amazing. But what happens when the phone is off, who is going to cheer you on? That’s where you come in! When you need a voice of encouragement to push you further, turn to you rather than your phone. You’re the one that needs to do the work, so you should do the cheering!
Your inability to take control of your mindset is what keeps pushing you off of the wagon, not everyday challenges that life throws your way. It is up to you to decide whether or not you will be ruled by excuses or whether you will find the power to push through. It’s all up to you. Stop being your own worst enemy.
