Five things that happen when you lose weight (and lift weights)

A lot of people start their weight loss journey thinking that they’re going to reach their goals looking like a Victoria’s Secret Angel.  I hate to be the rain on your parade, but I have news for you.  Now, before you start getting despondent, hear me out first.  What I am about to tell you isn’t set in stone, and women capable of skipping these things are amazing (and possibly alien).  When you lose a large amount of weight, your body goes through more changes than just being smaller, so here are the top five things that have happened to me since dropping 20+ kgs of myself (that’s a toddler by the way).

Let’s start with the biggest, most obvious thing that happens when you lose weight.

Wardrobe Woes

Never in my life did I think that I would have a problem with fitting into smaller clothes.  My dress sense used to be considered Pin Up/Rockabilly, now it’s a combination of bag lady meets 90’s grunge girl.  I have quads now and my waist is really small, so I would need to find size 8 jeans for my tiny waist with size 10 legs to fit my quads into.  These are literally the problems I deal with now.

Yes.

Yes.

What Boobs?

I can’t actually complain about my boobage all that much, I have always been well endowed in the boob department.  The problem that I am having now is that what used to be full of lovely tissue is now looking a little sad.  I’ve lost some of my boobs and all of their will to stay up.  I am Googling breast augmentation as we speak.

Reflective Stretch Marks

I’m not sure if this is something that I am alone with right now, but my stretch marks are so big, they are reflective.  I am not even kidding either.  I gained massive amounts of weight when I fell pregnant, which is the first reason why I am a tiger without clothes on, then went and lost it all again.  If I wore a crop top to gym, it would be because I don’t want to get lost and my stretchies would help my husband see me.

Flexing… Lot’s of Flexing

One thing that I didn’t think that I would ever be proud of is seeing something happen when I flex.  I take flex selfies, I flex after a bath, I flex for my son… hell, if you mention my gains in public, I will flex for you too.  There is something wonderful about seeing your body changing before your eyes.  And if that isn’t good enough, you’ll quickly realize why there are so many mirrors in the free weight section – an hour of pure vanity while you watch your muscles work!

Loose Skin is a Reality

Women tend to hold a lot of weight in our stomach regions, so while our boobs are the first to go, abs are the last to appear.  Since losing a whole lot of weight, the skin around my stomach is loose and NAWT cutesty bikini ready, thankfully though, I am more a high waist bikini kinda gal anyway.  There are ladies who have it way worse than I do, and some who don’t struggle with this at all.  If you are one of those ladies looking for something for that unsightly skin, try adding grass fed gelatin to your morning coffee, drink loads of water and plank on a daily basis.  So far, that has helped me deal with the wavy skin under my belt line.

I Love My Body

I could go on and on about the flaws that I see in the mirror thanks to my weight loss, but I really don’t care about any of them at all.  Seriously!  I have never, EVER loved myself as much as I do now.  I’m a heartbeat away from kissing my flexed biceps and posting another fitness related post all over Facebook!  Why?  Because I am strong, bad ass and look better than I ever have.  That’s a pretty big deal for me!
